Sturgeon: Prehistoric Giants Among Us!

Sturgeon are incredible, prehistoric fish. Pacific Northwest sturgeon means the white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus), North America’s largest freshwater fish, and the species behind the Columbia, Fraser, Willamette, and Snake fisheries.
They are among the longest-lived freshwater vertebrates, living 100+ years.
They are a true living fossil. Order Acipenseriformes traces back roughly 200 to 245 million years, first fossils ~175 million years ago (Jurassic), and largely unchanged since.
Native to the Pacific coast and its river systems, anadromous and bottom-feeding, with bony scutes and a cartilaginous skeleton.
They can be giants. BC’s Fraser River leads at ~890 pounds in 2021. The Columbia has documented multiple 500+ pound fish; historical (unverified) reports cite 1,500 to the 1,800 pound Fraser fish from the late 1800s.
Catching seven- to nine-foot sturgeon is not uncommon when clients fish with me.
